Hawaii crowned its first-ever HHSAA state high school surfing champions on May 1-2, 2026 at Ho'okipa Beach on Maui, capping the inaugural season of surfing as an official high school sport. The event was made possible by $685K in state funding signed into law by Gov. Josh Green, covering coaching, judging, and travel costs for competitors from across the islands.

Nine-time world champion Carissa Moore joined in celebrating the milestone event, which organizers hope becomes an annual fixture on Hawaii's high school sports calendar. The championship followed the OIA's inaugural high school surfing contest and season-long qualifying held on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.
